What parents need to know

Parents need to know that GiggleKids is a good buy for $.99 if you want to upload a few photos to make a slideshow and let toddlers tap on some circus animals and hum along to 10 favorite kiddie songs. But there's one oversight: There's no visible way to retrieve the settings icons once you click "hide" in settings (meaning you can't upload more photos until you force quit and restart the app). And there's some bugginess: After a lot of quick tap-tapping (a common toddler pastime) the icons can disappear along with other visual elements; force quitting and restarting the app restores them.

  • Kids will have an easy time tapping animals and presents on the circus page, and a slideshow of their pictures runs automatically when they click the camera icon. Click a music note and kids are on a page where they can easily tap on songs to play. Parents can click on the settings icons on the bottom right to upload photos and get more information.

  • Mostly private. One of the settings icons allows users to email for help. You can turn these icons off and they can only be turned back on by restarting the iPad. You can also click on "Write a review in the app store."

Is it any good?

At $.99 an iTunes parent reviewer is right: GIGGLEKIDS is a good value. It's easy amusement under the big top as tots tap on a seal spinning a ball, a present where out hops a festooned ostrich, and more. The music page has cheeping birds to tap on while kids enjoy 10 of their favorite songs (though it would have helped for language development if they weren't instrumentals -- parents, get singing). And with iCloud parents have easy access to more of their photos to fashion into a tot's very own slideshow. Other than the bugginess mentioned above, GiggleKids is a great app.
