What parents need to know

Parents need to know that FlipCards - Flashcard app for memory training is a fine app for creating flashcards but gives kids access to Quizlet, a public online database of user-submitted flashcard sets that contains some mature content and language. Within the app, kids can create flashcard sets by typing in text or adding images from their camera roll. Kids can view their sets for practice or share the sets by email or on Facebook or Quizlet. Kids can also search for and download flashcard sets created by other users on Quizlet. Quizlet has an educational purpose, and there is a mechanism to flag flashcards as inappropriate on the website, but there are still a fair number of sets that contain mature images and foul language (often directed at assignments or teachers).

  • Users can create sets flashcards by typing in text or selecting images from their camera roll (spell-check does not apply to text). Tutorials explain the purpose of flashcards, how to create and edit them within the app, and how to utilize Quizlet, a website where users share flashcards and quizzes. Creating an initial flashcard set is quite simple, but adding and reordering cards requires a few extra steps. Users with an Internet connection can easily search for and download flashcard sets from Quizlet (although the displayed dates when sets were last edited are incorrect), and they can also easily upload their own sets to Quizlet.
  • Some of the online flashcard sets may reference violence or contain violent images.
  • A few of the online flashcard sets reference sex or contain sexual images, either in academic or lurid contexts.
  • Some user-submitted online flashcard sets contain swear words such as "s--t," "bitch," etc. A few words, such as "f--k," are automatically represented as ****. These words are often used in the title of the flashcard set to insult a teacher or assignment.
  • A link from the main menu contains a link to the developer's website and a link to rate the app.
  • Some of the user-submitted online flashcard sets reference drugs, including with some photos, but this is usually in an academic context.
  • Mild privacy concerns. Users can share their flashcard sets on email or post them on Facebook or Quizlet, a public website where users share flashcards and quizzes.

Is it any good?

For a free app, FLIPCARDS is a quite useful flashcard tool. The flashcards created within the app are quite lovely, with bright colors and text and your own photos to keep things interesting. Creating and editing the flashcards and navigating around the app is not always intuitive, but viewing them is simple and fun. The integration with Quizlet is a mixed bag. Access to the flashcard sets on Quizlet has a high potential for learning, but also for exposure to inappropriate and inaccurate content. In addition, while some of the features included on the Quizlet site are available here, such as sorting search results by most studied, alphabetical, or most recently added, others are missing -- like the ability to browse by category or transform flashcards into quizzes and test yourself.
