What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Family Feud & Friends is an online multiplayer version of the famous game show. It is designed to be played against Facebook friends, but you can also play against random opponents, whose first names and profile pics you may see (if they have connected the game to their Facebook accounts). There are also in-app purchases built into the game, as you are required to pay two virtual coins each time you play. You can get extra coins by inviting friends to join or by buying them with real money.

  • The game is pretty easy to use. You type answers on a virtual keyboard and, to make it easier, the app will guess what you are starting to type and offer three or four multiple choice options.

  • It costs you two in-game "coins" for every game you want to play. While you earn a free coin every day that you log in, you'll eventually run out unless you either buy more (coin packs run from $2 to $100) or earn more by getting your Facebook friends to join.
  • Some privacy concerns. You can only play the game against live online opponents. You can either connect the app to your Facebook account and play against your Facebook friends, or you can let the app set you up against a random opponent. First names and profile pics may be seen.

Is it any good?

The actual game show component of FAMILY FEUD & FRIENDS is great -- it's got fun questions and a sleek, easy interface exactly like that of Ludia's regular offline Family Feud app. But this version is built solely for playing against online opponents — and you don't get to see your opponents taking their turns. Instead, you and your opponent both answer the same set of questions and you see who got more points. With a setup like that, it's more fun to play against computer-controlled families in the offline version. Plus, the whole idea of paying two "coins" for every single game just feels like you're being gouged.
