What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Civiballs HD is a puzzle game that borrows liberally from the iOS hit Cut the Rope. Players must get colored balls into matching vases by cutting chains. This takes careful timing and strategic thought, which could be educational, but the game's later puzzles are likely too challenging for younger children. The game prompts users to promote it to friends, by offering an additional 10 bonus levels that can only be unlocked by gifting via the Crystal network. An in-app purchase allows people to skip as many levels as they want (otherwise, they can only skip five), but is not required.

  • The play mechanics are very simple, much like the iOS hit Cut the Rope, but the puzzles can be head scratchers.

  • Users who want to short-cut through areas of the game can buy unlimited level skips via in-app purchase for $1. A cartoon character in the game is shown holding a copy of Forbes Magazine. Also, the game prompts users to promote it to friends, by offering an additional 10 bonus levels that can only be unlocked by gifting via the Crystal network.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Crystal, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, create a profile, set location, post scores on leaderboards, add friends, post status messages, and connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers. The Crystal privacy policy states that it may collect and use information including name, email address, a phone’s Unique Device ID, and IP address. Crystal gives users the option to disagree to terms and conditions, after which new personal data will not be stored on their servers. This will reduce the functionality of the Crystal network for the user.

Is it any good?

While CIVIBALLS HD is certainly a derivative title, that doesn't stop it from being a fun one. Beyond cutting chains to make colored balls drop into their matching jars, the game regularly introduces new elements to the puzzles, such as cannons, catapults, and arrows to help you launch balls across the screen. It's a game of trial and error, but one that's not brutally difficult. Strategic thinking is rewarded, while random slashing of chains will end the level quickly.

Charging to skip levels is a bit opportunistic, given how many other games allow players to do this for free, but it's something most players won't need -- and given the game's low price, it's not a particular burden to those who do choose to buy the shortcut.
