What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Catball Eats It All is a physics-based puzzle game that almost defies description. Players control a fat cat head that rolls around and eats whatever's in its path on a playing field that looks like a series of magazine clippings. It is, in many ways, like the Katamari Damacy series, which was also based on rolling and collecting. The game contains no language or notable violence concerns, but additional levels will cost players money (right now about $1 each). Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

    The app has very intuitive controls and is never overly complicated. Touch the side of the screen to roll in that direction and touch both sides simultaneously to jump in the air.

    Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

 

CATBALL EATS IT ALL might be the strangest app to hit the App Store in 2011. (Actually, make that the second strangest app.) It's still a heck of a lot of fun, though. While the game lifts heavily from the Katamari Damacy series style of gameplay, it doesn't make the mistake of trying to copy the story. Instead, there really isn't really a plot here, other than a cat gobbling up whatever it can find, before eventually devouring the entire planet (which, when zoomed out, looks like a collection of dropped magazine clippings). 

It's an extraordinarily easy game to play and one that actually hooks you without you realizing it. Having to pay for additional levels (dubbed "courses") is a lot better than the in-app purchasing strategy of many other games (where you have to pay for currency to build items), and the game gives you enough of a taste to know if buying more will be money well spent for you.
