What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Berenstain Bears Go on a Ghost Walk is a just-spooky-enough Halloween storybook app for little ones, especially those who are already familiar with the bantering Berenstain Bears. Papa Bear once again runs amok with one of his big ideas, this time to make a very scary Halloween ghost walk for a school fundraiser. Much to Mama Bear's and the cubs' dismay, Papa gets too spooky with his costume. But the scariest dream of his life soon helps him see that being too spooky, even on Halloween, isn't fun. The interactive elements include spooky sounds when objects like ghosts and witches are tapped, as well as Halloween (and other, more general) vocabulary words appearing on screen around the objects on screen.

  • The app is very easy to use. Kids swipe to turn pages, and when kids touch different objects on the screen, the word for that object appears on the screen.
  • In one scene, Papa Bear appears with his pirate costume that includes two fake swords, one through the hat on his head and the other with blood seeping out around it, stuck through his belly. He removes both after Mama and cubs disapprove. He has a bad dream about scary costumes and learns his lesson that costumes that are too scary aren't fun for everyone.

Is it any good?

Especially for kids who love Halloween but don't like costumes that are too gory and scary, BERENSTAIN BEARS GO ON A GHOST WALK affirms the sensibility that blood and guts costumes don't mean fun for everyone. The Berenstain Bears stories are classics, and this one weaves the Halloween tale around the same basic storyline of many Bear Family stories with a moral: Papa goes overboard on an idea, and Mama and cubs reel him back in with some common sense. There are many interactive images that kids can touch while reading this story or having the story read to them by a narrator, but the interactivity is limited to spooky sounds and words that match the image touched appearing on screen. There's no movement to the interactivity, which would have been a nice addition.
