What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Adventures of Robin Hood storybook app offers kids a wonderful retelling of the tale of that legendary bandit hero in long-ago England. Although a rather lengthy (for a storybook app) 45 pages, the book is split into short chapters and has enough interactivity that it moves along at a nice pace. All of the illustrations are animated, which also helps hold kids' attention. Some of the interactivity, such as touching characters on the screen who then yell for no apparent reason, isn't all that relevant to the story. But others, like being able to catapult boulders into a castle, or learning the definition of words by picture or written explanations, fit into the context much better. This storybook is available in English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, and German.

  • Easy to use, although you have to unlock a small padlock at the top of the pages to access certain features, and that's not clearly explained.
  • Old England-sort of violence with bows and arrows and catapults. No one shown being killed.

  • The main page includes a place to enter your email address to receive news on other apps by this developer, as well as a "Discover More" option that connects to a page with more apps. On the very last page of the storybook, the developer has listed a number of other apps as well.

Is it any good?

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD's best feature is the animated storybook illustrations, which are both beautifully drawn and rich with each character's emotional expressions that help the story's tension and excitement come to life. It's nice to see Maid Marian take a more prominent role in helping Robin Hood escape the evil plans of Prince John than she does in some versions of this story. The sound effects and interactive elements also help enliven this story for kids who read it or have the story read to them. Some of the features, such as how to turn pages or what the different options actually do, must be discovered by trial and error, as the icons don't always make it apparent what they're used for. Overall, an engaging app that helps kids discover the magic of a classic tale.
