What parents need to know

Parents need to know that ABC for Kids is an alphabet app that requires an adult's full participation to be effective in helping kids learn. The app displays a letter of the alphabet, along with a picture to help kids associate that letter with a word. For example, the letter "A" goes with a picture of an airplane, and "C" has a picture of a cat. However, there is no narration, so kids will need help identifying the intended word -- "airplane" could also be "plane" or "jet," and the "cat" pictured looks very much like a "kitten." ABC for Kids also has a test section; kids see a picture and have to choose the letter associated with it.

    Kids touch the arrows to scroll to different letters and view images. The arrow to view the picture resembles a refresh button and is not intuitive. No narration is provided, so kids will need help with letter names and sounds as well as with identifying the pictures.

Is it any good?

 

ABC FOR KIDS is a simple application that is lacking in some of the basics needed to be an effective learning app. The app displays letters of the alphabet, but does not give kids the letter names or the letter sounds. The app shows a picture associated with each letter, but does not identify the picture by name, so there's no way to guarantee that kids will associate the correct word with the image and the letter. The pictures provided are real photographs of balloons, cats, and dogs, but are a little dull on the eye. One thing parents may appreciate is that there are no external links. Still, there are other free apps that are more entertaining and have some learning value for kids.
