What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Pillow Pets is a simple, side-scrolling platformer game based on the toy line of Pillow Pets pillows, which have become popular because of their adorable and recognizable designs. In this game, the pillows come to life and inhabit a magical world called Dreamland. It is up to players to find all the lost pets and return them to the real world and onto their bed, where they belong. The game is designed for young children and has very accessible controls -- players need only to guide their characters around the screen to collect stars and find the various Pillow Pet creatures.

  • The goal of this game is to "rescue" the various Pillow Pet creatures scattered throughout Dreamland. Players will feel a sense of reward and accomplishment for each one they find. In addition, the dialogue in the game is very friendly and courteous in nature. There is no real sense of peril or danger, as players explore a very vast and colorful land.
  • The Pillow Pet characters do not have strongly developed personalities or traits, but they are nice and friendly, making them good companions or role models for players.
  • This is a very accessible game for young children. It has basic controls as players explore Dreamland and search for missing Pillow Pets. Players scroll around the environment and explore until they find something new. There is no sense of failure in this open-ended game, regardless of player skill level. The main point of the game is for players to roam around a fantastical, colorful world while continuously meeting new Pillow Pets characters.

What's it about?

In PILLOW PETS, players are tasked with roaming throughout various levels of a fantastical world called "Dreamland" to rescue the entire collection of Pillow Pet characters. Although they are described as being stuck in the magical world, the pets never appear in distress or anxiety. In fact, the Pillow Pet characters are always smiling, friendly, and happy to provide players with words of encouragement. After finding each pet, players guide them back to the real world where they can adorn a bedroom and make it feel more comfortable and safe.

Is it any good?

Pillow Pets is a very accessible game for young players, though those players are also the most susceptible to the consumerism that is inherent to this title. As players explore the magical world of Dreamland, they must find every one of the Pillow Pets, each of which corresponds to a real-life product in the Pillow Pets brand. This forges a bond between players and every one of the pillows. The game itself is simple and easy to play, and players who have a Pillow Pet will likely enjoy the way their favorite pillow animal is brought to life in this game, but the underlying sense of product placement is something that should be considered.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the consumerism in this game. Does this game make you want to buy Pillow Pets?

  • Which Pillow Pet character is your favorite?

  • How do you feel after saving each Pillow Pet?
