What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Penguins of Madagascar: Dr. Blowhole Returns Again! (Wii) is a comedic action game that requires the uDraw tablet controller (sold separately) in order to play. There's some very mild slapstick violence in the game, as well as some "yuck" humor (a penguin throwing up various items, etc.). There are also coloring pages to find and chance to creatively color them in.

  • The penguins exemplify teamwork. Each has his own special role, and all four work incredibly well together.
  • The penguins are generally good-natured and helpful, but in this particular story, they are motivated by blackmail. They (or at least their leader) perform a slew of tasks so that a secret of his won't be revealed.
  • Steering with the uDraw stylus takes some getting used to, but the controls work reasonably well overall.
  • There's a wee bit of slapstick -- falling and crashing and the like -- plus a boss battle in which the villainous dolphin, Dr. Blowhole, gets zapped (without much damage) by lasers.

What's it about?

In this uDraw version of THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR: DR. BLOWHOLE RETURNS AGAIN!, the villainous dolphin, Dr. Blowhole, plots revenge on his penguin foes by brainwashing the eccentric lemur, King Julien. Julien blackmails Skipper, the penguin leader, and sends him off on a series of ridiculous scavenger hunts... but it's all part of Blowhole's plan.

Is it any good?

The Penguins of Madagascar: Dr. Blowhole Returns Again! (Wii) is an enjoyable puzzle-solving adventure with some humorous dialogue. With the exception of the hidden coloring pages, however, it feels like it could have been just as much fun if it were presented as a game with standard Wii controls. The uDraw controls feel layered on, rather than a natural fit for the game. But at least they don't detract from it. The game, which requires you to swap characters frequently and puzzle your way around various different obstacles, offers a good time either way.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about teamwork and cooperation. When each of the penguins is so different, how do they manage to work well as a team?

  • What can this seemingly silly story and its goofy penguin characters teach us about accepting the uniqueness of every individual? And about tolerating differences?

  • Do you like playing games on the uDraw Tablet better than just using the Wii remote? Why or why not?
