What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Nickelodeon Fit is a package of physically active mini-games featuring a slew of characters from different Nick Jr TV shows: Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go, Ni Hao Kai-Lan, and the Backyardigans. The games are well-designed for preschoolers and can get them on their feet and moving around a lot while they play. Most of the games are designed for a single player, but there are a pair of 2-player mini-games as well. While the game can be played with the Wii Fit balance board controller, doing so will actually provide less exercise than playing with just a Wii remote.

  • While there's always the underlying hidden message of "Watch Nick Jr," the game's overt message is a strong one about getting exercise and staying fit.
  • All of the characters presented here are depicted as positive, encouraging role models. They get kids excited about physical activity and cheer them on as they play.
  • These motion-controlled exercises were well-designed for preschoolers to follow. The game allows you the option of using the Wii Fit balance board, but points out that kids will actually get more exercise without it. You need to be gentle on the balance board, so while fake running on the board is exercise, skipping the board during a running activity will allow you to really pick up your feet and move those muscles more.

  • The game features characters from four different Nick Jr TV shows and is hosted by the network's mascots, Moose and Zee. In this way, it promotes not just a single kids' show, but the Nick Jr network and all of its shows as a complete package.

What's it about?

In NICKELODEON FIT, the Nick Jr network's mascots, Moose and Zee, host a series of off-the-couch, get-moving mini-games, featuring Dora, Diego, Kai-Lan, and the Backyardigans. Kids will jump rope, run races, paddle rafts, spin hula hoops, pedal bikes, jump to bump balloons, and take part in many other active activities. The game can be played with either a Wii balance board or with just a regular Wii remote.

Is it any good?

The all-star line-up of characters in Nickelodeon Fit is sure to draw preschoolers to the game, but its the absolutely fun and incredibly easy to play activities that will keep them entertained. All kids need to do is hold the Wii remote in their hands, follow the simple instructions (which will be both spoken aloud and demonstrated visually by the characters), and start moving. We'd suggest skipping the Wii balance board, even if you have one. For one thing, you're not supposed to jump on the balance board or really run on it -- try telling a preschooler that when they're playing a virtual jump rope game. But either way, these games are fun, colorful, and completely appropriate for the target audience. If you've got preschoolers interested in active gaming, this is the way to go.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about active gaming. Does playing a game like this provide enough real exercise? Can active games substitute for real workouts?

  • Parents can also ask their kids about licensing and marketing in video games. Does playing a game with all these Nick Jr characters make kids want to watch those TV shows?

Our first Wii game for my daughter. She caught on quickly (she'll be 4 at the end of this month) and can see how she's supposed to move by watching the "model" in the bottom left corner of the screen. The games also do a great job to encourage her to do her best. She loves getting the medals at the end.

Great first game for preschoolers.
My son loves this game we bought this game because he already loves the characters and watching my husband and I play video games so we thought this would be perfect for him. All of the games require the child to learn how to follow directions, remember patterns and color recognition, and encourage hand eye coordination. I also love that it allows him to burn off energy when the weather is poor and we are stuck in the house.

Wonderful Pre-school age Wii Exercise game just for them.
I love this game for my 4 year old, he can play the whole thing on his own and gets exercise! He has seen me do my exercise games with the balance board, and was happy to have his 'own' exercise game. The balance board is tricky for him at 4, he mainly plays the games with controller only - but I know as he gets a little older he will get better at the balance board for more of a challenge.
