What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Lalaloopsy is a toy-based DS game that will appeal not only to kids who like the Lalaloopsy dolls, but also to children that enjoy doing crafts and playing mini-games. The soft sell here is masterfully done. Although there is no call to run out and buy Lalaloopsy dolls, kids get introduced to every one of the dolls and make friends with them by helping them and giving them gifts crafted in the game.

  • Kids go around the game helping others, doing craft projects, and making friends and giving them gifts.
  • The dolls are helpful, charming, and polite.
  • The game is very easy to play. Kids familiar a DS will immediately know how to move, and voice over instructions as well as simple graphics show kids what else to do in the game. The sewing mini-game can be a little tough to do.

  • Language is cutesy -- using "sew" for "so" -- and appropriate for young children.
  • The game can come packaged with a mini-version of a Lalaloopsy collectible doll. As the game is about interacting with all of the Lalaloopsy dolls and making friends with them, it's a soft-sell, but nevertheless, a smart marketing tool that will appeal to young girls that like these "crafty" dolls.

What's it about?

Kids choose to play one of the 12 collectible dolls in LALALOOPSY and go around the world with their pet, meeting other dolls and making friends. Kids will help each girl doll they meet find their lost pets, and then play mini-games that simulate making crafts, including creating friendship bracelets, sewing mittens, and others. Friendship with the doll characters is then reinforced by giving them gifts and helping them keep their pets happy.

Is it any good?

The Lalaloopsy game is particularly well suited for young girls who love the pretty rag dolls upon which the game is based. The dolls have hand-made details like button eyes. Each doll is a character in the game and true to its personality, crafting skills, clothing, and pet. Kids walk across the cutesy fantasy world and find items for making crafts and unlock mini-games that simulate doing crafts such as painting, baking, and sewing. As kids play the games, they unlock new patterns to try in each craft.

The games allow young players to practice skills like color and pattern matching, as well as tracing. There is some creativity involved as well, as kids do not have to match the patterns perfectly but can design their own creations as they play the games over and over again.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about video games as marketing devices.  Parents can ask kids if they know how this game helps to promote Lalaloopsy toys even though nothing in the game looks like an ad. Did you want this game because it came with a Lalaloopsy toy?

  • Can you think of any other video games that also help to promote toys and or movies?
