What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Fashion Forward is a family-friendly casual game with positive messages about body image and a view of fashion that strives to be inclusive rather than exclusive. The main character, Risha, opens up a Hollywood clothing boutique that caters to people of all shapes and sizes rather than just super-skinny actresses. The game is moderately difficult but offers a relaxed mode for players with slower reflexes.

  • The game's main character is fed up by the "downsizing of womankind" and opens a fashion boutique that caters to women of all shapes and sizes. The message is that even women with non-supermodel bodies can look fashionable -- and deserve to!
  • Risha is a great role model who tries to be a good influence on her customers, not only by selling plus-sized clothing but by stocking her shelves with organic, sustainable, and fair trade products.
  • The pace can get quite frantic, especially in later levels, but players can switch to Relaxed Mode at any time, which gets rid of the time limit.
  • Risha's shop is vandalized by rivals, but the events are described and not shown.

What's it about?

FASHION FORWARD is a spin-off of Sandlot Games' popular Cake Mania franchise that combines time management and hidden object gameplay. Players run an unorthodox Hollywood fashion boutique that's unique for catering to plus-sizes. As customers arrive in the store, players must sell them the correct merchandise as quickly as possible to earn the maximum amount of cash. Customers express what they want through thought bubbles with pictures of the clothing inside, by description (such as "orange overalls"), or by groupings like two blue items, three red items, and so on. In between levels, players can play short mini-games and spend the cash they've earned on new outfits and shop upgrades.

Is it any good?

Fashion Forward is a solid and enjoyable casual game when it comes to gameplay and production values, but it's the game's quirky humor and positive messages that really set it apart from the other fashion-themed time management games on the market. Like Cake Mania, Fashion Forward has its share of entertaining customers such as the power-hungry mall cop or the teenage boys and girls who flirt with each other if they're side by side in line. What's more, the game's message that you don't have to be rail-thin to be fashionable is a great one.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why the fashion industry is full of so many super-skinny models. Are super models a fair representation of how clothes will look on the average person? What impact do these models have on your own body image?

  • What are the differences between fashion and style? Which is more important?

  • What are some of your favorite fashion outfits and "looks?"
