What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Deep Realms is a turn-based role-playing game played on the Facebook social network. Combat with magic and medieval weapons is a big part of the game, but it's not graphic. Players can interact with the characters of strangers by battling them in the arena or helping with boss battles. Deep Realms is free to play, but premium currency can be purchased to extend play-time or buy powerful equipment. Because the game encourages recruiting allies, kids may be tempted to friend "strangers" to help them in the game.

  • The main character is an archetypical role-playing game hero who gets chosen to fight a great evil, and along the way has to explore various dungeons and defeat hundreds of enemies.
  • Players are cast in the role of the "good guy" battling the evil that's threatening the land. Various companions and characters pop up occasionally to help them along the way. The major method of defeating evil is by fighting.
  • Gameplay, including combat, is turn-based and controlled with the mouse. Like most RPGs, players have some control over improving various character stats and skills.
  • In turn-based battles, players use medieval weapons such as swords and bows, and magic, to defeat enemies including aggressive animals and undead creatures. There's no blood or gore, and enemies fall to the ground and disappear when defeated.
  • Players can strip their male or female characters down to their underwear in the equipment selection screen.
  • Not applicable.
  • Players can spend real money to speed up the game, purchase more energy, or buy exclusive equipment that gives a significant boost in combat. Players are also encouraged to post messages on friends' walls and recruit them into the game for help.
  • Players can visit a tavern in town, but the interior of the building isn't even visible, and there are no references to drinking.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can battle other characters or assist them, even if they belong to strangers. The game also encourages friends to recruit allies to help in combat and unlock special items, which might tempt players to "friend" strangers on Facebook.

What's it about?

DEEP REALMS is basically a dungeon-crawling role-playing game (RPG) that has been adapted for social networks. Players choose one of five classes (warrior, Templar, ranger, assassin, sorcerer) for their character, then explore different regions in search of a great evil that's threatening the land. Along the way, they'll defeat enemies, purchase stronger equipment, and level up to learn new skills and perks. There's also a town to visit, where players can challenge each other to duels or help defeat bosses.

Is it any good?

Deep Realms is designed for "hardcore" RPG fans on Facebook, and obliges with plenty of loot to find, monsters to slay, and character stats to customize. Still, it's not as exciting or varied as similar social games like Zynga's Adventure World. The generic "fight the great evil" plotline is terribly cliched, story development is minimal, and the dungeons are sprawling and repetitive. Deep Realms is perfectly enjoyable for fans of dungeon crawl-style RPGs, but isn't as deep as its name suggests.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about online privacy and staying safe while online.  What precautions should you take to protect your personal information on social networks?

  • Families can also talk about what class you picked for your character and why? How does each class's strengths and weaknesses change the gaming experience?
