Parents need to know that DaGeDar is a racing game based on a series of new toys. The game has a variety of alien creatures who race one another in the form of speedy balls. The game, while obviously aimed at younger kids, has an incredibly high difficulty that makes defeating the computer-controlled opponents a frustratingly hard feat. There is no tutorial to help you learn the controls, the rules, or anything else.
If you're familiar with the DAGEDAR toys, then perhaps you'll know the basic story behind these racing monster balls. But if the game is your first exposure to them, you'll be left without a clue as to what these things are, why they're racing, or what you're supposed to do with them. They're balls that race on looping outer-space tracks. That's it.
Maybe DaGeDar is a cool futuristic racing game with loads of awesome characters to unlock and wild, funky racetracks to conquer. But you'd have to be a hardcore gamer with the patience of a saint to find that out. Most players -- especially the young kids the game is aimed at -- will find it to be a frustratingly difficult exercise in futility. When an adult game reviewer can race against the game's very first (and ostensibly easiest) opponent fifteen times without being able to beat him, the game is too difficult. A tutorial of any kind may have helped, but alas, there is none. Any child who is into DaGeDar enough that they absolutely must play this game will probably need to spend hours just getting good enough to pass the first challenge. You'll know whether or not your child has that kind of patience and perseverance.
Families can talk about video games can be used as marketing tools, and the way some toy companies license games in order to advertise their products.
