Parents need to know that Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, based on the movie of the same name, is a music and rhythm-matching game that requires players to perform movements to the beat of a variety of songs. This game skews a little older than the intended audience of the movie because a few of the songs contain flirtatious lyrics and there is one reference to a man being shot, though these lyrics are not overtly provocative or graphic. There are 30 songs in total and the game supports both single-player and two-player cooperative play modes. For the Xbox 360 version of this game, the Kinect motion sensor is required.
The story in ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED is incidental to the dancing aspect of the game. It mirrors the story from the movie of the same name, though in limited scope and context. The story involves the chipmunks performing on a cruise when they become shipwrecked and must work together to get out of their predicament. The story is presented in images and cutscenes in between rounds of gameplay. Also in the "Story Mode," players get to mix it up by performing on a variety of different tropical islands with varied background scenery. There is also a Freeplay Mode that allows players to dance to the songs without story cutscenes.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is not for dance game fans; it is for Alvin and the Chipmunks fans. The wide selection of songs, sung by the unmistakable chipmunk voices, will please fans of that cute, unique style. However, for the most part, the dance controls come off as basic and unchallenging so aficionados of other dance titles may not find as much appeal here. In addition, the Story Mode presents the story in an insufficient way that appears more as an afterthought than a central part of the game. In short, there is a nice, varied selection of songs, and the chipmunk vocals differentiate this game from others, but players should not go into the game expecting anything more than a simple, casual dancing title.
Families can talk about how this game can be used as an exercise tool. What else can be fun and active at the same time?
Why are the chipmunks always causing so much mischief? Do they ever do anything that crosses the line?
